Work on a major £1.1million carriageway widening scheme on the Northway in Portadown is substantially complete – some four weeks ahead of schedule.
The capital scheme involved the widening of 1.9kilometres of carriageway to two lanes in each direction from the Seagoe to Kernan Loop junctions was carried out by Gibson (Banbridge) Ltd. with traffic signal work carried out by Siemens.
Danny Kennedy said: “It is a fantastic achievement to deliver this vital improvement to the road network in the Craigavon area well ahead of the proposed end of November completion date. Around 27,000 vehicles a day use the route which is a critical link to and from the M1 Motorway.
“I congratulate all those involved and would particularly thank the public for their patience during the works. This is a significant investment in roads infrastructure which will bring benefit to the many motorists using this vital link between Armagh, Craigavon and Belfast.”
Several elements of the work remain to be carried out, including provision of the new street lighting, which will be completed under mobile traffic management on delivery of the lanterns early in November.
The public are reminded that whilst all temporary traffic management will be removed, until this work has been completed, the 30mph speed limit will remain in operation.
