Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has commended staff and contractors for the successful completion of road schemes in 2013/2014 which accounted for a £7 million investment in the roads infrastructure in the Craigavon area.
Speaking ahead of this tonight’s (Monday) meeting between the Department for Regional Development and Craigavon Borough Council, Minister Danny Kennedy said: “My Department invested over £130million in structural maintenance, improving many miles of the road infrastructure across Northern Ireland in the last financial year.
“In particular in the Craigavon Borough, despite ever increasing demands on budgets, DRD invested over £7 million maintenance works.
“DRD is using its available resources highly effectively and continues to deliver quality public services in Craigavon Borough Council and across Northern Ireland.”
Previewing the work scheduled in the area during the current year, Mr Kennedy said: “DRD’s proposed programme for this financial year will see road resurfacing on Union Street / Tandragee Road, Lurgan; North Street, Lurgan and Upper Ramone Park, Portadown.
“In addition, my Department also carries out an annual programme of resurfacing works which is implemented on a scheme priority basis, subject to the availability of the necessary financial resource.”
Speaking at the meeting, Southern Divisional Manager Simon Richardson outlined some of the other significant areas of work completed by the Division last year, including junction improvements on the B2 Derrytrasna Road with the Derrycorr Lane and Lenny’s Road, Lurgan.
The Department delivered a total of 50 kilometres of resurfacing in the Craigavon Council area at various locations, including A3 Kernan Loop and slip roads, Portadown; A27 High Street / Market Street, Lurgan; A27 Mahon Road, Portadown and the B2 Carn Road roundabout.
In relation to the current year, Mr Richardson highlighted the excellent progress being made by the contractor working on the widening of the A3 Northway to four lanes between the Seagoe Road and Kernan Loop.
