‘Ammunition’ found during south Armagh alert

A cache of ammunition has been discovered in south Armagh, the PSNI has said.

The security alert in the Captain’s Road area of Forkhill, South Armagh, has now ended.

The threat from dissident republicans to members of the security forces remains high.

A mortar device was found in another part of South Armagh recently.

Police thanked members of the public for their patience.

All roads in the area have reopened and residents have been allowed back to their homes.

DUP MLA William Irwin welcomed the find.

He said: “Firstly I would welcome the good work of the PSNI and Army technical officers in removing this quantity of munitions from circulation and indeed the public in this area for providing the information as to its whereabouts.”

“We have been reminded of late that there are those in society who are still wedded to the idea of violence and mayhem in a bid to alter the democratic will of the people, however as is proven by the passing of information to the police, the public are very much against this type of reckless behaviour.

“It is to be welcomed that this material has been removed from circulation
