Scammers are already tying to cash in on the Volkswagen emissions scandal, with a bid to con one Armagh woman out of her brand new car.
Volkswagen is saying little about the emissions scandal, other than that cars are safe and roadworthy, according to the helpline.
At some future date – while the company has not given an indication – cars may have to be recalled.
The engines in question have also been used in other makes.
The Armagh woman – through a friend of the family – told Armagh I she wants other Volkwagen customers here to be wise to the ruse being used by scammers.
The friend said the woman – who has just purchased a new Volkswagen Golf – had been contacted by someone to say they were coming to take the car to “get the emissions fixed”.
She said: “Someone from the south phoned and said they were from Vokswagen UK and that they would call to collect the car and take it to get fixed.
“She thought this was strange and contacted the car dealership she had purchased the car from and they confirmed that Volkswagen UK had not taken any offical action yet.
“No VW recalls have started yet regarding the emissions fault.
“Anyone with a VW will get a letter from VW UK to say their car is being recalled.
“No one should hand over their car keys to anyone calling at their home.”
