Almost £25,000 has been raised to support the recovery of an Armagh mum-of-three who was seriously injured after being struck by a car while running in the city.
The phenomenal figure was achieved through a concerted effort by the friends and family of Lisa McKeever, who organised a fundraising walk to support her path to recovery.
Lisa, who works as Head of Religion in Abbey Christian Brothers Grammar School, sustained “life-changing injuries” in the collision, which occurred while she was out for an early morning run along the Monaghan Road.
The Air Ambulance NI responded to the terrifying call, offering incredible life-saving care that has made all the difference to Lisa today. As such, a donation will also be made to the charity to help continue their vital work.
Initially, the group behind walk – known collectively as ‘Friends of Lisa’ – aimed to raise £5,000. To do so, they organised a ‘walk and talk’ event from St Colmcille’s GFC in the Grange on Saturday (September 5).
The event attracted attention from far and wide and even pulled in messages of support from Olympics Gold Medalist, Mary Peters; Co Down TV Presenter, Patrick Kielty; country music sensation, Daniel O’Donnell and many, many more!
South Armagh man and BBC broadcaster, Connor Phillips – who had the fortune of being taught by Lisa many moons ago – also compered the event.
Thousands descended on the grounds to show their support for the deeply loved and highly respected Grange woman over the weekend.
In attendance, work colleague, Mr Brian Hamill said – as if speaking to Lisa directly: “Today, as we walked around the pitch at St Colmcille’s GFC Grange alongside so many wonderful volunteers, friends, and supporters, you were very much in our thoughts.
“What began as a fundraising event became something even more meaningful, bringing people together in support of causes close to our hearts, including the vital work of Air Ambulance Northern Ireland.
“It was inspiring to see the community unite, giving their time and energy to help others. Following your accident while out running, we wanted you to know that you have the support, friendship and best wishes of everyone around you.
“You are a valued friend and colleague, and we at Abbey CBS are all thinking of you during your recovery. Today’s event was a reminder of the strength of community and the kindness of people who rally around when support is needed.
“We hope that strength surrounds you too in the days and weeks ahead. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery. Take care of yourself, and know that we are all rooting for you.”
