Armagh city centre traders raise concerns over 28 broken street lights

Thomas Street in Armagh lies in darkness
Thomas Street has been particularly affected by lack of lighting

Traders in Armagh city centre have raised their concerns over a severe lack of lighting at night.

The issue was brought to light after it transpired that 28 units were faulty.

The majority of these faults have centred on the top half of Thomas Street, but Market Street, Upper English Street, Russell Street and Dobbin Street all have issues.

And with colder, darker evenings upon us, the issue is being treated as urgent,.

SDLP Councillor Thomas O’Hanlon says he and other traders have reported the issues to the Department for Infrastructure.

Councillor O’Hanlon said: “Initial reports were in relation to Thomas Street, but when I went to check it out for myself, I noticed a significant number of lights out in Market Street, Upper English Street, Russell Street and Dobbin Street. I counted a total of 28 lights out!

“I have reported these to DFI Street Lighting for urgent repair and hope to see progress in the coming days.

“With the dark evenings the lack of lighting becomes really apparent when all the shops close.

“I’ve previously highlighted how dangerous the footpaths can be when wet, the fact that parts of the city centre are in darkness is dangerous and I hope that repairs can be carried out as quickly as possible.”
