After a nationwide search an Armagh man has been crowned one of the UK’s ‘Buffest Binmen’ for a special fundraising calendar.
Proudly representing the Orchard County is Thomas McAllister (62) who was just one of 12 of the country’s “hottest” binmen selected and features on the November page of the calendar.
The new 2026 calendar was created by Waste Management experts, BusinessWaste.co.uk who have elected for all profits to go towards charity, FareShare.
The competition aimed to shine a light on waste workers, who are often overlooked, while also keeping it light-hearted and fun, and to raise money for the charity.
It was open to anyone working in the waste sector – anyone of all ages, genders, and locations across the UK.
While physical appearance did play a part (The title was the ‘Buffest Binmen’ after all!), it wasn’t the only quality that was considered. The winners were also chosen based on their personality, enthusiasm for the job and pride in their work.
Explaining why he’s proud to be a waste worker, Thomas McAllister said: “I enjoy my job and am very happy to be working with the crew I am with.
“I also love being involved with the members of the public and am only too glad to help answer any questions they may have.”
Mark Hall, waste management expert and co-owner of BusinessWaste.co.uk, said: “Our nation’s bin workers don’t get the appreciation that they deserve, and this calendar is all about celebrating them.

“It’s been brilliant to see so much buzz around the competition online, and we only hope it will continue a conversation that shines a light on our bin workers and showcases how much we rely on them to keep our streets clean.”
“Sometimes the best way to talk about serious topics is to have a bit of fun, and we’re glad that the competition has been able to do precisely that, while raising money for an important cause too.”
The charity partner, FareShare’s vision is ‘no good food goes to waste’. The charity works to redistribute surplus food to charities that turn it into meals, and every £1 raised can provide 5 meals.
Graham Kelly, Head of Fundraising at FareShare UK, wanted to thank those who have helped to make the calendar a success: “Thank you so much for supporting FareShare. Your generous fundraising will help us get good-to-eat food to the people who need it rather than going to waste.
“Every day, food from FareShare is redistributed to over 8,000 charities across the UK, including homelessness shelters, after-school clubs, refuges, and older people’s lunch clubs.
“Your support for FareShare powers the redistribution of surplus food, helping strengthen communities and change lives while reducing waste.”
The calendar is now on sale for £9.99, and orders can be placed on the BusinessWaste.co.uk website.
A great gift just in time for Christmas, to help support an important cause, or as a novelty pick if you know someone who has a thing for brawny binmen!
