An Armagh man has been given three months to prove he has put his criminal behaviour behind him as his sentence has been deferred.

The 26-year-old, who is due to complete a probation order in June, told court: “I’m sorry, this is completely out of character.”

Corey Stefan McMullan, of Culdee Terrace, pleaded guilty to assault on police, two counts of criminal damage and possession of a bladed article in a public place at the city’s Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Court heard the criminal damage referred to two police cells and the weapon was a knife blade.

Defence barrister Patrick Taylor stated: “He has completed 100 hours of community service which he was handed in June of last year and will continue to attend probation until the end of June this year.

“He has in this period moved away from criminality and this should be viewed as an aberration in the scheme of things.”

Deputy District Judge Peter King said: “I am going to defer sentencing for 12 weeks for him to stay out of trouble.”

Speaking from the dock, McMullan stated: “I’m sorry, this is completely out of character.”

Deputy District Judge King told the defendant: “You clearly want to put this behaviour behind you. I am going to give you three months to prove that.”

The case will return for sentencing on July 2.
