Police in Armagh are asking anyone noticing chalk marks near their property to get in touch.
There have been suggestions in the past that the presence of such markings had indicated a property was being marked out by burglars.
There is no evidence to suggest whether this is or is not the case.
But the police want people to contact them and take photographs of the markings if they do discover them.
Several phone calls were received from concerned locals – reporting chalk marks around house pillars or fencing – on Saturday.
Police in Armagh responded via a social media appeal.
“It may be just local youngsters being a bit creative, but it might not,” they said. “If you find markings on your property, give us a ring or take a photograph of it before you wash it off.
“If your neighbours are away, check their property also please. If you have a neighborhood watch scheme let them know.”
Police can be contacted via the non-emergency number 101.
