Armagh rated on a par with London for air pollution today with levels almost THREE times that recommended by the World Health Organisation.
Levels were described as being “very high” and were being monitored closely.
It was a similar situation in Belfast, Newry and Derry/Londonderry.
Across the UK as a whole, pollution levels were widespread moderate and high.
Still and foggy weather conditions were being blamed andc there were isolated pockets of “very high pollution”, including Armagh and mainly across south east, central and eastern England.
According to the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: “During periods of high air pollution adults and children with lung problems, and adults with heart problems, should reduce strenuous physical exertion, particularly outdoors, and particularly if they experience symptoms.
“People with asthma may find they need to use their reliever inhaler more often. Older people should also reduce physical exertion.
“Anyone experiencing discomfort such as sore eyes, cough or sore throat should consider reducing activity, particularly outdoors.”
Adults and children with lung problems, adults with heart problems, and older people, in areas where very high levels are recorded were also advised to avoid strenuous physical activity.
Air quality is likely to improve going into tomorrow as winds strengthen.
