The Royal School Armagh have paid tribute to a “much-loved” former teacher following her passing on August 14.
Mrs Noel Scott had for many years taught English and Latin at the historic grammar school in Armagh city, which – in today’s format – was born out of a merger between an existing Royal boys’ school and the all girls’ High School in the 1980s to become a co-educational setting.
Speaking of their esteemed former colleague, the school explained that Mrs Scott had been a pupil at the Armagh City Girls’ High School before heading to Queen’s University to complete her studies.
She began her teaching career in Aughnacloy College, they said, before returning to the High School where she took on Head of English and later Vice-Principal.
When the merger occurred at The Royal School Armagh, Mrs Scott was appointed as Senior Mistress.
Paying tribute to a woman who has left a lasting impression on the school, a spokesperson said: “She retired 27 years ago, but her influence has lived on in the lives of the many pupils she taught and colleagues she supported.
“Noel is remembered as a gracious, caring, and diligent teacher who gave so much to her pupils and the wider school community.
“Colleagues have spoken warmly of her wisdom, kindness, and the respect she inspired.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to Noel’s family at this sad time and are grateful for the legacy she leaves behind in the life of our school.”
Fondly remembering a beloved teacher, a former pupil said of Mrs Scott: “An absolute gracious and amazing teacher, so encouraging. Her calm voice has resonated with me throughout my life. One in a million teacher.”
Another added: “So sorry to hear this, Noel was so good to us growing up and I loved having her as my teacher. Thinking and praying for you all.”
Mrs Scott passed away at hospital on Thursday, August 14.
A death notice described her as the beloved wife of the late Robin, much loved mother of Alun and Michael, dear mother-in-law of Alex and Diane, cherished grandmother of James (Amy), Alistair (George), Andrew (Janice), Joshua and Ben, a great grandmother of Isaac, Lydia, Lily and Poppy and dear sister of the late Archie, George and Alan.
Her funeral will take place this Sunday (August 24) at St Aidan’s Parish Church, Grange for service at 2.45pm, followed by interment in the adjoining churchyard.
Donations are being gratefully received for Parkinson’s care of Jackson Stoops & Sons, Funeral Directors, 44 Moy Road, Armagh BT61 8DL.
