An Armagh woman with a poor record for theft has been given a chance by a judge as she is handed a two-year conditional discharge.
Samantha McGuinness, 26, appeared at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, charged with theft.
The incident occurred on November 6, last year, when police were called to Home Bargains in the city after it was claimed a male and female had stolen goods to the value of £68.46.
Officers attended the store and reviewed CCTV footage from which they identified the defendant as the female in question.
Among the items stolen were key rings, a knife, a dog toy, light bulbs, a candle holder and tea lights.
The footage showed McGuinness place the items in her bag before walking out of the store without paying.
She was subsequently arrested and in interview made full admission to the theft.
Court heard that the defendant was currently serving a three-month sentence for a theft dating back to January of this year.
Defence Counsel stated that McGuinness had pleaded guilty at her first opportunity, they went on to say at the time she was addicted to prescription drugs and was a negative influenced by her ex-boyfriend – the male seen with her during this offence.
They explained that the two had since split up and the defendant had no intention of renewing the relationship.
District Judge Paul Copeland commented that McGuinness had an “extremely poor record for someone of such a young age” but he stated he was prepared to give her a chance.
The judge decided not to extend her time in custody and she was given a conditional discharge for two years.
