An Armagh native is set to embark on a solo, unsupported, bike journey from her home in Bordeaux, France, to the Southern Area Hospice in Newry — a staggering 1,500-kilometre (930-mile) ride – next month.
The inspiring fundraising challenge, set to begin on Friday, April 4, is led by Elaine Cornett, a dedicated cyclist and passionate supporter of the Southern Area Hospice Services.
Elaine’s mission is deeply personal. Her father, Sam Cornett, was diagnosed with cancer at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the challenges posed by restrictions at the time, Elaine took comfort in knowing he received exceptional care at Southern Area Hospice, where he passed away on January 19, 2022.
In his memory, she is undertaking this monumental cycling challenge to raise vital funds for the Hospice, which provided outstanding palliative care and support to her family during their most difficult time.
“Taking on this cycle alone and on a push-bike might seem crazy, but this challenge is my way of personally thanking the incredible staff at Southern Area Hospice, celebrating my dad’s life, and pushing myself to accomplish something unforgettable at 50-years-old,” said Elaine.
The challenge will take place over three weeks, beginning in Bordeaux on April 4, 2025, with Elaine expected to arrive at Southern Area Hospice in Newry on Saturday, April, 26 where she will be welcomed by the very staff who cared for her father.
Funds raised through Elaine’s challenge will directly support Southern Area Hospice, enabling it to continue providing compassionate palliative care, comfort, and support to families affected by life-limiting illnesses.
“Elaine’s dedication and determination are truly inspiring,” said Sarah O’Hare from Southern Area Hospice.
“We are incredibly grateful for her commitment to raising funds for our services. This challenge will make a real difference in the lives of the patients and families who rely on our care.”
The Hospice encourages the public to support Elaine’s journey by donating generously and following her progress on social media. Donations can be made through the official fundraising page here, where updates on her journey will also be shared.
