Armagh’s bin lorries “are fit for purpose”, according to Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council’s head of environmental services.
The issue was raised at December’s monthly meeting of Council, by Councillor Darren McNally, who requested an audit of the lorries was carried out to ensure they were fit for the task at hand.
“Is there any chance of an audit of the bin lorries in Armagh,” said Councillor McNally.
“I have been told by staff they are not fit for purpose. Can someone give that a quick look at, to see what needs to be done?”
In response to this request, Council’s head of environmental services Barry Patience accepted some of the vehicles in Armagh may be older than those in other areas but insisted the current fleet remains fit for purpose.
He also confirmed council has ordered new lorries.
“The vehicles in Armagh are fit for purpose,” he said. “However, we have placed an order for a number of vehicle last week and they will be more modern vehicles.”
It is understood the procurement process for these lorries is still ongoing and, as such, further information about the purchase and deployment of these vehicles will be kept under wraps until the process is completed.
