Armagh’s Christmas tree ‘switch-on’ date miscommunication cleared up!

The switch-on date for Armagh’s Christmas Tree lights has been announced… but instead of being enthused, the community have been left bemused!

Each and every year, families look forward to seeing the big, jolly, red-suited man attend Market Square to officially set the city centre tree a-twinkle.

It’s always a well attended event that provides an additional boost in footfall to the high street.

However, this year the Council’s ‘Santa on Tour’ date has left many members of the public reeling… unnecessarily.

As part of this year’s Christmas celebrations, Santa is due to arrive on his special ‘Tour Bus’ at 1pm on Sunday, November 30 with the entire event lasting until 4pm… and many – incorrectly – assumed Santa was attending to switch-on the lights.

Upon learning of the date and time for the event, several members of the public – and business owners – have voiced their disbelief at the Council deciding to host the event on a day when the majority of Armagh’ city’s shops are closed.

But, when contacted for clarity, Council have clearly stated that the Santa on Tour event is NOT happening on the same date as the Christmas Tree Switch On.

The lights will be turned on, as always, to signal the start of the Georgian Festival at “dusk” on Thursday, November 27.

The festive season in Armagh kicks off on Friday November 28, with the first of the light shows – this is a ticket only event with limited tickets available for Friday and Saturday 8pm shows – tickets are £3.50 per person for a 15 minute show.
