Armagh’s historic Robinson Library have paid tribute to a “greatly respected” former Governor and Guardian.
The staff, volunteers, Governors and Guardians of the library – which houses the Archbishop Richard Robinson’s personal collection of books and fine art – said they were “deeply saddened” to learn of the passing of former colleague, Harry Carson MBE.
Harry – who had been involved with the library since 1990 – passed away peacefully at his home in Armagh on August 30.
He retired from his position of Lay Governor and Guardian in 2019, after 29 wonderful years of “tireless” service.
Paying tribute to Harry, his former colleagues said of his invaluable contribution: “He raised awareness of the Library and its collections within library and museum circles.
“He helped to develop the Library as a welcoming place for groups, individual visitors and researchers. He created the first treasure hunts for children, helping us to become a ‘playful museum’ for families.”
While he served the Armagh Robinson Library with enthusiasm and dedication, Harry also had a long history as a Librarian in various capacities across Northern Ireland.
He was employed in the Public Service in Northern Ireland for forty-two years, and retired as Chief Librarian of the Southern Education and Library Board in January 1990.
During that time, he served as President of the Library Association of Ireland, which later awarded him an Honorary Fellowship. He also gained an Honorary Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.
In 1990, Harry was appointed Deputy Keeper of the eighteenth-century library in Armagh, to work with the then Keeper, the Very Revd Herbert Cassidy, and held that position until 1998.
Back in the year of his retirement, when asked what he would remember of his time as a Deputy Keeper and a Governor and Guardian, Harry replied: “I am delighted with the condition and standing of the Library today, in comparison to what it was when I joined twenty-nine years ago.”
Following his retirement, Harry continued with his involvement with Armagh Robinson Library as a volunteer for several years.
As a mark of respect, the library will close on Friday September 4, for the morning, to allow staff and volunteers to attend Harry’s funeral.
A death notice described him as the dearly loved husband of Iris, much loved father of Geoff and Tim, dear father-in-law of Julie and devoted grandfather of Sam, Calum and Andrew.
His Funeral service will be held in St Mark’s Parish Church, Armagh on Friday September 4, at 11am, followed by a private cremation.
