Armagh’s Santander to officially cheque out as premises becomes available to let

On July 1, the Armagh branch will have vacated their premises located on the corner of Upper English Street and Russell Street

The Armagh-based premises currently occupied by Santander could soon be welcoming a new tenant as it enters the property market to let.

In March of this year, the Spanish-owned banking giant announced its intention to close the Armagh branch as part of its plans to “update its branch network from June 2025 to better serve the changing needs of its customers”, along with the Portadown and Dungannon branches and 92 others across the UK.

The move was met with huge public scrutiny and, speaking at the time of the announcement, Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart shared the views of disgruntled customers, commenting: “This is a huge disappointment, particularly for elderly customers, businesses, and those who rely on face-to-face banking.

“While Santander claims more people are moving online, the reality is that many in our community still need in-person services.

“I know that Portadown Post Office will step up as they always do and support those who need face to face banking facilities, but this closure by Santander is yet another reminder of how high street banking is being eroded.”

In a statement from the high street lender, Santander explained that the bank will be “changing the format of a number of branches to include 18 counter-free and 36 reduced hours branches, alongside its 290 full-service branches and five Work Cafés”.

On July 1, the Armagh branch will have vacated their premises located on the corner of Upper English Street and Russell Street in the city centre – and as such – the space is now readily awaiting a fresh tenancy.

Listed by Colliers, the property comprises a three storey, end terrace, ground floor bank extending to 1,016 sq ft with first floor and basement offices.

The lease is set at £10,000 per annum on a maximum three year contract with rates payable at £7,690.

The Dungannon branch – on the corner of Market Square and Church Street – has also become available to let with an annual rent of £9,000.

The Portadown branch on Market Street, however, has been listed for sale with offers invited over £176,500.

Interested parties should contact Colliers for more information.
