Business as usual despite major disruption for city centre shops

Armagh roadworks

A major gas laying scheme has begun in the centre of Armagh city this morning (Saturday).

Firmus Energy have employed contractors to dig up the road in the Upper English Street and Shambles area of the city – much to the consternation of local businesses.

“They promised they wouldn’t block the road but sure they have taken up all the parking spaces in an area already notoriously difficult to park in,” said one local trader.

“It’s typical, no regard for business owners whatsoever.”

Despite the major disruption caused, the footpaths remain open and businesses are trading as normal – even if it will take a little longer to find a parking space.

The works, which commenced this morning will see contractors working through to Sunday, November 4.

The initial works is based on a nine day plan and Firmus contractors will return on Sunday, December 2 to complete construction works in the area.

Ciaran Brennan, Project Engineer for Firmus Energy said: “We have engaged extensively with Transport NI, traffic police, other utility providers and we have agreed a traffic management plan for the duration of the work to minimise disruption to residents, businesses and road users.

“These works are necessary to bring natural gas to the new Aonach Mhacha Irish language cultural centre. The proposed construction works will involve the closure of one traffic lane inbound and diverting outbound traffic.

“In addition to supplying the centre with a supply of natural gas, this project will also enable an additional 45 homes and businesses to connect to the Firmus Energy Ten Towns natural gas network.”
