Call for tougher stance on removal of paramilitary murals in ABC borough

Paramilitary mural in Lurgan

The are 22 paramilitary murals in the ABC borough, it has been revealed.

Now, Alliance Councillor Peter Lavery is urging the Housing Executive to take stronger action in removing the murals from properties it owns across the area.

No murals have been removed in the last 12 months.

Councillor Lavery said their continued presence projects “fear and intimidation” into communities and insisted they must be taken down without delay.

“Murals and facades of paramilitary groups have no place in society,” he said.

“Despite being fully aware that these paramilitary hate images exist on their property, the Housing Executive also confirmed that none have been removed from their land in the borough over the last 12 months. This simply isn’t good enough.

“Communities across the borough want to be left in peace so they can get on with their lives. Therefore the sooner these paramilitary relics are thrown in the bin the better.”
