Parking charges and enforcement should cease immediately.
That’s the call being made by Sinn Fein MLA Liz Kimmins who says an imminent relaxation of penalties should be forthcoming.
The Newry and Armagh representative confirmed that she has contacted the Minister for Infrastructure requesting she consider this.
“Following on from calls by Newry Bid for a relaxation of parking enforcement, I have contacted the Minister for Infrastructure Nicola Mallon requesting she takes this action with immediate effect,” said Ms Kimmins.
“The Minister has been open to positive action to alleviate challenges caused by the Coronavirus crisis so I hope she will address this issue.
“There is also a need to look at parking charges in car parks to be suspended as currently people are using coins and touching these machines.
“It would be a wise move for all car parks, be they publicly or privately maintained to suspend charges. Health and safety at this very difficult time, comes first.”
The Department for Infrastructure is expected to issue an update in relation to this issue later on Tuesday.
