Caretaker at ‘heart and soul’ of award-winning Armagh school recognised for her dedication

'Kim always goes above and beyond and the whole school community is so delighted she has received this well deserved recognition'

An Armagh school caretaker who goes “above and beyond” in her role at an acclaimed city school has been celebrated at a prestigious awards ceremony in Belfast.

Site Manager Mrs Kim O’Hara for Mount Catherine’s Primary School was awarded Best Caretaker at the Families First NI Awards at Titanic Hotel, Belfast on April 6.

Mrs O’Hara had been nominated for the recognition by both parents and colleagues of the school for her “dedication to her work”.

A representative for Mount St Catherine’s said of the evening: “It was a wonderful reason for staff to dress up and celebrate Kim’s dedication to her work, every child and staff member.

“The excitement was all worth it when Kim received the Best Caretaker Award!

“Kim always goes above and beyond and the whole school community is so delighted she has received this well deserved recognition.”

Issuing her congratulations, schoolteacher Mrs Brogan said: “Definitely well deserved Kim – you are the heart and soul of our school. Not one bit surprised you won!”

The school, based at Windmill Hill in the city, received an additional surprise that evening – and the “icing on the cake” – when it was announced that Mount St Catherine’s had also scooped The Best School Award for “its outstanding and nurturing approach”.

Said the representative: “Mount St Catherine’s has been part of the Education Authority Nurturing Schools Programme for several years; all staff have received extensive training and their Nurture Unit (The Beehive) offers a safe space and emotional support to pupils in need of it.

“At Mt St Catherine’s staff know a child needs to feel happy and safe to be able to learn.”

One person said of the wins: “Both awards so well deserved. Congratulations everyone for always going above and beyond for the children in your care.”
