A Co. Armagh DUP representative has said that the latest ATM withdrawal statistics for the United Kingdom for 2024 show Northern Ireland as the most ‘cash-heavy’ part of the UK.

Alderman Gareth Wilson, who represents the Cusher area on ABC Council, says cash is necessary in the age of online banking, calling for more protection and options for cash payments.

The analysis, published by ATM operator Link, revealed that UK customers withdrew almost £80 billion from cash machines in 2024.

While the stats show that cash and ATM use has fallen “significantly”, 75% of adults still use cash at least once a fortnight.

In 2024, Northern Irish banking customers withdrew an average of £2,274, the highest figure in the UK.

This was down on the figure in 2023, of £2,340, and less so than in 2019, which was £2,931.

Speaking on the figures, Alderman Wilson said: “I have repeatedly made the claim that the surge of online banking, online shopping and generally the growing reliance of online processes for lots of different aspects of life, is all well and good if you are confident and trusting of the operating systems.

“The reality of course is that there are many people who are not confident or proficient in this technology and they would much rather use cash for payments. The elderly and more vulnerable are a particular case in point.

“Whilst the statistics show a slight decline in cash withdrawals across the entirety of the UK, down by 1.2%, this is of course in line with the rapidly increasing requirements that online systems have brought.

“I also feel it is a result of the closure of many important high street banks in our towns across the province limiting further cash lodging and access points.

“On top of that many goods and service providers, including banks, are pushing people to online methods and that of course will impact cash use options.”

Alderman Wilson continued: “The fact Northern Ireland is the most cash heavy part of the UK regions shows just how vital the cash element is to our society here and the cash options must be retained and more thought and consideration given by retailers and service providers for the option of cash payments.

“For many folk the physicality of cash in their hand is a key part of budgeting and I know this is the case for many of our elderly people.

“Cash is king for many in the province and these statistics clearly show why it must be bolstered and protected.”
