A security alert in Moy has continued through the night.

Police have confirmed that the operation, which has centred on the Oakfield Gardens area, has continued overnight and cordons will remain in place into Saturday.

A number of homes have been evacuated with Moy GAA opening its doors for anyone affected.

Army Technical Officers have been working at the scene throughout the night.

A police spokesman said: “We understand the disruption this has caused, especially for those directly impacted. A local sports club is being used as a rest centre.

“Cordons will remain in place overnight and we ask that the public avoids the area. We will keep you updated.”

Councillor Deirdre Varsani, issuing an update early Saturday morning, said: “Further items need worked on to make safe. This means that the squad will remain in place overnight and possibly into late morning.

“A controlled explosion has been carried out safely and work continues to ensure any and all items of suspicion are dealt with.”

She added: “The Moy community worked brilliantly offering assistance and accommodation to evacuated residents.”
