The communities of Armagh, Bessbrook/Camlough, Crossmaglen, and Lurgan came together in an extraordinary show of support for this year’s Darkness Into Light (DIL) walk, raising an impressive £58,335.95 for local suicide prevention charity, PIPS Hope and Support; and PIETA House.
The funds raised will provide essential support for individuals and families relying on the critical services offered by PIPS Hope and Support.
The dawn walk held on the first Saturday in May, gathers participants around the world in a shared effort to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention and mental health services.
Next year’s Darkness Into Light event is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2025.
Ciara Murphy, Chairperson of Crossmaglen DIL, expressed deep gratitude to the community. She said: “It was heart-warming to see our community come together for such an important cause. Every step taken during Darkness Into Light is a step toward hope and healing.
“The overwhelming support shown this year is a testament to the strength and compassion of our community. We are immensely grateful to everyone who contributed to making Crossmaglen DIL special and supporting this fantastic charity.”
Raymond Flynn, Chairperson of Bessbrook/Camlough DIL, added: “This year’s turnout was incredible, and we are deeply thankful to everyone who joined us in walking under the one sunrise. The funds raised will make a real difference in supporting those in need.
“Events like Darkness Into Light remind us of the power of community—together, we can make a meaningful impact in the fight against suicide.
“Thank you to everyone who made an impact and a special thank you goes to an individual who, while wishing to remain anonymous, made a significant donation to Bessbrook/Camlough DIL, contributing notably to our total.”
Padraig Harte, Fundraising, Marketing, and Communications Manager at PIPS Hope and Support, emphasised the importance of the event’s success.
He said: “We are overwhelmed by the generosity and support from communities across County Armagh. These funds will enable us to continue providing lifesaving services to those in crisis and support families affected by suicide. Every person who registered, walked, and fundraised played a crucial role in helping us save lives. Together, we are bringing hope to those who need it most.”
Padraig continued: “This event is a powerful reminder that no matter how dark things may seem, there is always hope when we come together as a community. The collective effort of everyone involved shows that by working together, we can break the stigma around mental health and ensure that no one walks the path of despair alone. We are forever grateful.”
