A new Post Office will be opening in Armagh in the coming weeks.
It will be located within O’Kane’s store at the Moy Road roundabout.
The supermarket and filling station has grown substantially in recent years and includes an in-store deli, among other things.
Now the business, established by the late Tom O’Kane and now run by his son, Brian, is about to see the introduction of a Post Office.
A business case for the development has been approved and it is expected to be up and running in the coming weeks.
The store confirmed the good news on Friday on social media.
Newry and Armagh Sinn Fein MLA Cathal Boylan has been quick to offer his congratulations.
He described it as “a great result for local people in the vicinity”.
“Having worked closely with Mr O’Kane I was confident that a strong business case was put forward and having encountered some obstacles along the way I can say we are delighted that a strong community argument has won the day,” aded Mr Boylan.
“It is a great result. That end of town will now have a local postal service and residents will no longer face battling through heavy traffic to carry out their postal needs; indeed pensioners without access to transport will now be able to avail of these services easily.”
City Councillor and former Lord Mayor Garath Keating also praised the hard work put in by Mr O’Kane to see this come to fruition.
“This is fantastic news,” he said. “I am delighted that all of Benny’s hard work has paid off. O’Kane’s is conveniently located and the staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I wish the team all the best in this endeavour.”
