A Bessbrook man who was caught driving without insurance, MOT or a full licence has been disqualified from driving for four months.
Court heard defendant, who had 10 live points on his provisional licence, used the vehicle for getting to and from appointments at Craigavon Area Hospital.
Noel Brown, of Millvale Park, pleaded guilty to using a vehicle without insurance, not displaying ‘L’ plates, being an unaccompanied ‘L’ driver and having no vehicle test certificate at Armagh Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday.
It was heard that on May 4, police stopped the defendant driving a Volkswagen Polo on the Mullabrack Road, Markethill, after checks showed it was uninsured.
Subsequently, further inquiries were made which confirmed that there was no active policy out on that vehicle.
It was also discovered that the defendant only held a provisional licence and that the car’s MOT had expired.
Defence counsel stated: “Mr Brown is a 65-year-old man, he has 10 live points on his licence, he suffers from ill-health.
“He uses the car to get to and from Craigavon Hospital for medical appointments.”
She added: “He had purchased a new vehicle so he had to move this one to make room for it. He thought he was still covered and planned on driving it a short distance to his son’s house.”
Brown was disqualified from driving for four months and ordered to pay a fine of £375, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within 20 weeks.
