The funeral has taken place of an Armagh man who died after what police described as an ‘altercation’ in the city nine days ago.
Nigel Burgess – who had the nickname Budgie – died at Ballinahone Close in Armagh on Saturday, April 11.
And as he was laid to rest at the municipal cemetery at Ardmore in Armagh on Monday, his sister Stephanie Shaw, said the family were “just devastated” at the loss.
And speaking to Armagh I from her home in Perth in Western Australia, she said they would like to “thank everybody for their kind words and messages at this difficult time”.
Police had received a report of an altercation and Mr Burgess was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics.
A man was arrested and later released on bail pending further enquiries.
Among those paying tribute was Lord Mayor Mealla Campbell, who described him as a “well loved and respected member of the community”.
And just days after the heartbreaking loss, a wreath was laid outside Mr Burgess’ home by the chairman of the Armagh Branch of the Royal British Legion Nigel Baird, following his “untimely death”.
It was placed alongside floral tributes which had been left at the scene.
The Legion, in a statement on social media, said: “Although not a member of the RBL, Nigel served in the Navy, the UDR and with the TA in Armagh.
“He is remembered by us all as a comrade and friend.”
Since the tragic loss of life, many family and friends have changed their profile picture to a popular image of Mr Burgess (main image).
Among them are a wide circle of relatives in Australia, who had been unable to travel home to attend the funeral.
The house and service were also strictly private due to the current government restrictions as a result of Covid-19.
Mr Burgess, a son of the late May, was a much-loved brother to Margaret, Pamela, Vivien, Allenby, Ronnie, Philip, David, Sandra, Janet, Stephanie and Heather. He had been pre-deceased by another brother, John.
