Family’s pride as Benburb cycle siblings raise over £3,000 and counting for children less fortunate

Aged between four and eight, the fab fundraising four are supporting Mary's Meals to ensure children living in Third World conditions can enjoy a nourishing meal each day

Four Benburb siblings, all under the age of 10, have completed sponsored cycles in order to raise money to support children less fortunate.

The quartet cycled laps of Benburb Park in the rain, wind, sun and snow in aid of Mary’s Meals, a charity which provides life-changing meals to some of the world’s poorest children every school day.

They set off on February 7, each with their own distance to cover and a target of £500 to raise.

Ten days on and the total sits at over £3,000, with Sarah (8) completing 20km , Jude (7) is hitting 16km and the two youngest, Noah (6) and James (4), breaking the 10km barrier.

Speaking to Armagh I, proud father-of-four, John said: “Myself and wife, Marie-Claire, are extremely proud of them and it seems strange but none of it came from us. It was all on their own steam.”

He explained that his mother Bridget – or Granny B to the children – volunteered with the charity and had been one of the founders alongside Pauline McCormick.

The idea for the sponsored cycle came from Sarah, the eldest, who often accompanied her grandmother in volunteering.

John said: “Basically what they do is put together backpacks for children because if they go to school in places such as Ethiopia they are entitled to a meal.

“I just think it is great. It is something that has been organised by children for children. It is an act of kindness which has sparked generosity from people, some of which I don’t even know.

He added: “£20 feeds a child for a year and to date over £3,000 has been raised. This was all inspired by our wee ones. They would like to thank everyone who has donated to date, Granda Patsy, Granny B, Granda Gerry and Nana Mary, all aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and strangers.”

Whilst the children had said: “It feels great doing something that will help other children who have less than us.”
