An Armagh expat who passed away suddenly in the USA has been brought back to Middletown, Co. Armagh, for his funeral.
Barry McArdle grew up in the Orchard County before embracing the ‘American Dream’ and building a new life for himself out in Boston, Massachusetts, where he died.
His funeral took place on Monday morning (December 4) in St John’s Church in Middletown, followed by private cremation at Lakeland’s Funeral Home in County Cavan.
Barry’s passing left behind two young sons, Connor and Finn, for whom a fundraiser set up in the United States has already raised just under $8,000.
The aim of the fundraising appeal, set up by Patrick Harrington on GoFundMe, is to support the children during what is an “incredibly challenging time”.
The fundraising notice reads: “He embraced the American dream, and worked hard to provide a good life for his boys, and this fund is being established to give them the opportunities Barry always hoped they would have.
“This GoFundMe campaign will solely go to a fund that will not only help provide for Connor and Finn this Christmas, but also provide financial assistance for their education.”
It continued: “Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a meaningful impact on the lives of Connor and Finn. As we approach the holiday season, please support his sons to ensure they feel the warmth of love and support during this difficult time.
“Thank you for your kindness, empathy, and support.”
So far, the fundraiser has managed to bring in $7,861, with donations still coming in.
Middletown GAA, where Barry once played, posted a tribute on social media, saying: “Middletown GAA are saddened to learn of the death of former player Barry McArdle who died suddenly yesterday in Boston.
“We extend our sympathy to his sons Connor, Finn and all the McArdle family. Ar dheis De go raibh an anam.”
A death notice said that Barry was the cherished Son of May and Cyril McArdle. It added he is dearly missed by his parents and siblings Paul, Darrin, Sharon, Cyril, Stephen and Ryan and wider family circle.
