For part three of our ‘Hidden Disabilities’ video series, in partnership with Duality Healthcare, we spoke to Katie Gray from Killylea.
Her son, Sebastian, suffers from NF1 – or Neurofibromatosis type 1.
NF1 is a genetic condition, resulting in the growth of tumours along the person’s nerves. The tumours cause a range of symptoms and the condition has had an impact on Sebastian’s behaviour.
Katie wishes people were more understanding and patient, acknowledging Seb isn’t a ‘bad child’ but that NF1 influences how he acts and engages with others.
She has called for more awareness around the condition, as she feels there are no organisations available in Northern Ireland providing support to those with NF1.
She spoke to Armagh I in the grounds of Armagh Observatory to discuss the impact that NF1 has on Seb’s life and how they manage the condition.
