Armagh cricket club’s U11s have seen off stiff competition from Waringstown to make it through to the semi-finals of the Northern Cricket Union Development Cup.
The game was played at The Lawn in Waringstown on Monday June 22, where Waringstown U11s won the toss and elected to bowl.
On a warm evening at The Lawns, it was a tightly contested affair, Armagh came out on top with a 7 run victory. Batting first, Armagh posted 283 for 4 with Waringstown scoring 276 for 7.
Waringstown set about the run chase but soon lost wickets to Armagh’s strong bowling and energetic fielding. Nevertheless, Waringstown steadied the ship and with just three overs to go looked set for victory.
However, they did not anticipate Armagh’s stunning finish, taking three late wickets. Waringstown finishing 7 runs short to give Armagh a famous victory.
The semi-final will be played at home on The Mall, with opponents and date still to be confirmed. Armagh U11’s await their opponents but based on their season so far (just one loss), they are not daunted by any club.
Last season they lost in the semi-final and are determined to go one better this year.
Armagh CC’s overall Youth Cricket programme goes from strength to strength.
In recent years the club has successfully introduced boys and girls from P1 upwards to Kwik Cricket and this initiative is starting to bear fruit in the older age groups.
The U11, U13 and U15 teams are all showing strong cricketing skills, growing squad numbers and a great sense of team spirit.
They are winning league and cup matches across all the age groups too.
The U13’s, like the U11’s, are into their cup semi-final and the U15’s are still in the cup too.
Armagh CC could be winning silverware later this summer!
A ‘Girls Cricket’ event will also be held from June 23 to July 1 on the Mall from 5-6pm every evening.
No equipment is necessary – just a bottle of water! There will be music, fun and of course… cricket. All for girls only! You can find more information here.
