Assurances have been given of an increased policing presence in Armagh city centre in response to a rise in anti-social behaviour over recent months.
At the same time, there will also be a greater community safety warden presence going forward.
Confirmation came in response to the issue being raised by Sinn Fein Councillor Sarah Duffy.
Over recent months, Armagh I has reported on multiple incidents of anti-social behaviour across the city.
Several businesses have reported vandalism and thefts.
On one occasion, a vulnerable adult was threatened.
There have also been several deliberate fires set, with the former Foresters’ building on Market Street being targeted on a number of occasions.
At the Armagh Shopping Centre at Thomas Street, there have been reports of business owners and customers being subjected to abuse.
The spike has left many fearful of the effects it will have on trade, given that shoppers could be put off coming into the city centre.
After multiple incidents, Councillor Duffy felt compelled to raise the matter at the last meeting of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership.
Her questions, while relevant across Armagh, also made particular mention of the EuroSpar complex at Thomas Street, where anti-social behaviour has become particularly prevalent.
Said Councillor Duffy: “Members of the public, business owners and staff have been rightly concerned and frightened by this negative behaviour.
“No-one should feel intimidated simply going to work, doing their shopping or going about their daily lives.”
The local representative said she had received assurances of an increased policing presence in the area, alongside a greater community safety warden presence going forward.
“Everyone deserves to go about their daily lives without fear of harassment, intimidation or harm, and we will continue to raise these concerns and push for action where it is needed,” added Councillor Duffy.
