A Keady man who was observed by police driving a car which had a number of defects has been ordered to pay a fine of £150.
The 26-year-old’s solicitor informed the court that the car has since been destroyed.
Damian Fintan Caherty, of Castleblayney Road, had a plea of guilty entered to charges of defective light, failure to display front number plate and defective exhaust at Armagh Magistrates’ Court, sitting at Newry, on Tuesday.
Prosecution outlined that at 4.50am on December 28, of last year, police on patrol of the Friary Road, Armagh, observed a Saab which had a defective headlight.
It was later noted that this vehicle also was not displaying a front licence plate.
Officers then signalled for the driver to pull over outside the Armagh City Hotel.
The driver was identified as the defendant and upon closer inspection of the car, police found that the exhaust was being held in place by a cable from the boot and was rattling.
Defence solicitor Chris Rafferty stated that his client worked as a baker and confirmed that the vehicle had since been destroyed.
District Judge Paul Copeland commented that the driving of a car in such a condition could have “led to disastrous events”.
Caherty was ordered to pay a fine of £150, along with the offender’s levy of £15, within eight weeks.
