A Killylea woman who lost her dad to Huntington’s Disease two years ago is organising a special fundraising event in his memory.
Ashley Clarke (31), lost her dad, Desmond on August 31, 2022. He was just 55.
Desmond’s passing came after 14 years of deterioration following his Huntington’s Disease diagnosis in 2008, when Ashley, at the age of just 14, took on the carer’s role alongside her brother, Ryan.
Throughout Desmond’s illness, Ashley was the primary caregiver and now she and her brother face a 50% chance of inheriting the same condition.
Since losing her father, Ashley has been involved in charitable work around raising funds and awareness for Huntington’s Disease. This year, she’s decided to honour his memory by combining her love for bikes with a cause close to her heart.
On September 1, she has invited bikes from all over Northern Ireland to Killylea to take part in a special ‘Burger Run’ in aid of the Huntington’s Disease Youth Organisation, a charity very close to her heart.
The day is particularly poignant to Ashley and her brother, as it marks two years since losing their dad to the disease.
The event will start in Killylea Play Park, before proceeding to; Armagh City, Tandragee, Newry, Newtownhamilton and Co. Monaghan, before returning to Killylea.
All road-legal bikers are welcome, with the event beginning at 11.45am sharp. Free burgers and soft drinks will be available on return.
Speaking to Armagh I, Ashley said: “We are thrilled to invite everyone to join us on Sunday, September 1 in Killylea for an 80-mile bike ride in memory of dad.
“It’s a day to bring together bikers of all levels, enjoy some great food, and support a cause close to our hearts – raising awareness and funds for Huntington’s Disease Youth Organisation.
“Your participation means the world to us as we honour dad’s memory and fight this rare disease together.”
