A Portadown man has been not been readmitted on bail after police found him in possession of a syringe suspected of containing a drug which “could kill him”.
A constable who has managed the 27-year-old for the last eight years stated he was worried about the safety of the defendant.
Jody Curry, of Woodside Hill, was produced at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday after breaching his bail conditions.
A constable outlined that the defendant had attended had recently attended Lurgan Police Station to sign his bail but was found to be unfit.
He commented that Curry had been tested for substances and “failed miserably”.
The constable stated that there were to be further charges arising from the breach.
Such was Curry’s condition that he had to be taken to hospital and whilst here he was disorderly, using obscene language and banging his head against walls.
A sample of the defendant’s urine was taken whilst he was in hospital and this tested positive for cocaine.
When he was taken back into custody, a search was conducted and a syringe was found on his person.
The constable stated: “At this stage it is not known what class of drugs it contains.”
Defence barrister Bobbie Rea stated: “Mr Curry has been on bail since October; he has adhered to the conditions.”
The constable outlined that the defendant had one previous breach; he was found in possession of cannabis whilst signing bail on November 19.
He added: “I spoke to a doctor who advised the drug in the syringe is used for epilepsy. He told me that if Jody Curry used it, it could have killed him.
“He was greatly concerned as the substance is so infrequently prescribed.”
Mr Rea said: “He has instructed it belonged to a friend, who is diabetic. I just implore some caution before refusing this man bail.
“He has been on bail for three and a half months. There are two solitary episodes under all of these searches and checks.”
The constable stated: “I have managed Jody Curry for the last eight years. There are a number of offences and there have been two bail breaches.
“The doctor said if Jody Curry injected himself with that drug he most certainly would have died. I am worried about his safety.”
Bail was refused in the case.
District Judge Copeland said: “The reasons being further offences have been committed whilst on bail, the protection of the public, fear of further offence and to some extent his own safety and well being.”
Curry was remanded in custody to appear via videolink on March 10.
