Plans by Screwfix to open a new outlet in Armagh have been given the go-ahead.
The proposals – first revealed by Armagh I in June – relate to the Spires Retail Park, just off the Moy Road.
The company will become the occupant of the former Halfords store.
Approval has now been given by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council for the new enterprise.
And the company – with approval now in the bag – has started the process of looking for staff to man the new outlet.
Positions for a retail supervisor and retail assistants – both full and part-time – are being advertised this week.
It is not known at this stage precisely when the new store will open but it is expected to be within the coming months.
The news comes just days after Armagh I reported that proposals to open at the Meadows Retail Park in Portadown had also been approved.
The company prides itself in stocking everything needed from house building to interior decorating, gardening, heating and plumbing, tools, and work and safety clothing and equipment, and much more besides, with tens of thousands of items to choose from and the ability to open up business accounts for tradespeople.
And it does so at greatly reduced prices, its UK-wide portfolio of over 700 stores allowing it to trade at vastly discounted rates.
The new unit at the Spires will stretch to in excess of 4,000 sq ft.
And in order to enable the major retailer to move to the city a change of use was required and has now been granted.
The outlet will have a trade counter and sales area and the applicant is also seeking permission to carry out “minor external alterations”.
The business operates typically on an Argos-style system of retail where products are contained in a warehouse type development and brought to the counter by staff.
It is expected – according to papers to council – that around 12 jobs will typically be created when up and running.
