People power has paid off and plans are expected to be revealed for traffic calming measures to be put in place at Middletown.
Just months after residents took part in a walk through the area – and years of lobbying – campaigners can celebrate a victory.
They have been actively calling for measures to reduce the speed of traffic through Middletown.
And there have been calls to for a major programme of resuracing at Church Street.
Both now are in the pipleline.
And the news has been welcomed by Sinn Fein Councillor Darren McNally.
He said: “Official confirmation has been received today about the road closure for the resurfacing scheme at Church Street, Middletown.
“This project is long overdue and it has taken months of lobbying of every level of the Department for Infrastructure, site meetings and constant calls to keep this on Transport NI’s agenda to get to this point.
“This past few months has been a long wait after receiving confirmation sometime ago that resurfacing was to be carried out at the contractors’ discretion, so to finally have proof in black and white is very welcome.”
Councillor McNally praised Middletown Community Forum saying members had “played a big role in driving this project forward and the need for traffic calming on Main Street in conjunction with Sinn Fein”.
He added: “I’m pleased to report that measures for calming will also take place in the form of addressing speed signage, red patches entering the village and possible traffic islands.
“I look forward in the months ahead to continue work with the forum to help secure all that is needed in the Middletown area.”
The resurfacing work – which will require a temporary road closure at Church Street – will take place between Monday and Friday, November 19 and 23.
