Armagh’s award-winning Navan Centre looks set to boost its tourism potential with plans to build a new Iron Age structure.
The attraction, at Killylea Road, Armagh, already has living history characters on site to tell the stories associated with the ancient Navan Fort.
And now a planning application has been submitted to Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council for consideration.
The application would involve the replacement of an existing structure.
The proposal is, according to the submission, for “educational purposes” and it would be “constructed using period techniques and materials”.
Plans also include associated fencing site works.
It would sit 50 metres to the west of the Navan Centre.
The new Iron Age structure would be bigger than that which it would replace. The existing has a floorspace of 336 sq ft and the new facility would be 417 sq ft.
The news comes less than three weeks after the Steering Group of the Royal Sites of Ireland – which includes Navan Fort – confirmed they were announced as one of three successful bids to get on Ireland’s new World Heritage Tentative List.
The application – by ABC Council, which owns the Navan Centre – will be advertised shortly.
