Police in Armagh are advising retailers and the public to be on their guard after reports of fake bank notes circulating locally.
The PSNI says Bank of England notes have been passed locally and are advising all to check them carefully.
The attempt to pass fake notes always heightens in the run-up to Christmas.
Last year arrests were made after fake notes were used in shops in Armagh and Craigavon, and at business premises in Newtownhamilton.
Police are keen to support local businesses in identifying, reporting and ultimately deterring criminals from using counterfeit bank notes.
In order to educate local business and encourage them to take the right action, the Crime Prevention Officer offers the following advice on this crime:-
Identification of Counterfeit Notes
• FEEL
The paper should feel stiff and crisp not limp, waxy or shiny.
• COMPARE
Always compare both sides of a suspect note to one you know is genuine (from the till etc). The difference will be easy to spot.
• WATERMARK
Each note contains a watermark that appears when held up to the light.
• THREAD
Each note contains a security thread which shows a continuous line when held up to the light.
• SERIAL NUMBER
If handed more than one suspect note, check the serial numbers are not the same.
IMPORTANT: – If you receive a suspect counterfeit note do not hand it back, note the details of the customer (photographic id) and contact the police immediately.
