A Portadown man who gave his brother’s name to police to avoid being caught driving without a licence has been disqualified for 12 months.
Daniel Martin Carroll, of Edward Street, pleaded guilty to driving without insurance, driving without a licence, obstructing a police officer and possession of a Class B drug.
Armagh Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday that the 27-year-old was stopped on May 30 by police on the Newry Road, driving an Audi A4.
Carroll gave his brother’s details to police instead of his own and told them he was not insured to drive the vehicle.
Officers then noted that the licence plate on the car did not match its chassis number.
The defendant was questioned about this and told police the original plate was in the boot.
He also admitted to officers that he had lied about who he was.
Carroll was subsequently arrested and when a search was conducted in custody a small brown square of a suspected Class B drug was found on his person.
During interview, the defendant gave full admissions but denied knowing the number plate was false.
Court heard that the charge relating to the licence plate was later dropped.
Carroll was handed a 12-month driving ban and was given a conditional discharge on the drugs offence.
