A new toilet block in a Co Armagh village will be officially handed over before the end of the month.
And the completion of the new facility at Middletown – which has been years in the pipeline – has been warmly welcomed.
With work also planned to construct a cross-border ‘greenway’ from Monaghan, the new toilets could not have come at a better time, according to one local political representative.
The long-awaited hand-over is due to take place during the week beginning March 26.
Sinn Fein Councillor Darren McNally expressed delight at the completed installation of new public toilets for Middletown.
“Many residents of the area had contacted Sinn Féin representatives stressing the need for such a public convenience,” he said. “The village has a large volume of traffic passing through it daily, and there had been no toilet facilities for tourists and people passing through.
Councillor McNally, who has long been campaigning for better toilet facilities in the village, said the building was not before time.
“This is a very welcome development that was long overdue,” he said. “Contractors have been on site for a considerable period of time and some complications arose due to a nearby electric metre and supplier, but I am pleased to announce these are being worked through and the end is finally in sight.”
His colleague, Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan, also commended those involved in the project and praised local residents for their ongoing patience while work was being completed.
Insisting that the “pains would be worth it in the end”, he added: “Middletown is a key part of the Ulster Canal Greenways project and these are the type of facilities visitors would expect.”
