It was relief for residents in Middletown after it was confirmed the village would finally get public toilets.
The announcement to install public toilets comes after an extensive engagement with local people on the issue.
Councillor Darren McNally said it was a win for residents “who’ve long made clear the need for a such a public convenience in their area”.
“In my engagement with residents it was clear a large volume of traffic passing through the village had caused concern as no toilet facilities existed for tourists and people passing through,” said councillor McNally.
“In response to those concerns, Sinn Féin had requested at a number of council meetings that council officials identify an appropriate place in Middletown where new toilets could be positioned.
“Funding which had been set aside by the council has now been released following the resolution of landownership concerns, and I am delighted to finally announce that work will begin in Middletown next week.
“Middletown is a key part of the Ulster Canal Greenways project, and this announcement will help develop the facilities tourists expect on their travels here.
“Public toilets are absolutely integral to enhancing the comfort and enjoyment of what Middletown has to offer to visitors and locals alike.
