Seven St Patrick’s Festival events you may not have known about

TRAD: Pat Woods and friends – Armagh

The Bard from Armagh presents an intimate evening of songs with Pat Woods and friends. The esteemed singer, who is a previous winner of Entertainer of the Year, has toured across the U.S.A many times, playing Irish festivals in cities of Chicago, Pittsburg, Cleveland, Milwaukee and Muskegon. Pat recently played in the Regency casino in Las Vegas as well as recording for several cable TV shows in Chicago. Pat will share the stage with some special guests and assures that the evening will be a night to remember.

KIDS: Spot

As part of the St Patrick’s Festival,  ‘Spot’ is a fantastic kids event will take place at the Studio Theatre in Armagh. The show focuses on a very particular stage light whose light shines and expresses itself by drawing shapes and colours on the floor. Simple words come accompany the actors’ action, in looking for a unity of image made of lights, sounds and movements.

FILM: Spiritual Celluloid – Three Colours: Blue

The Home of St Patrick Festival presents a special screening of ‘Three Colours: Blue’ a French drama written, produced and directed by the great Polish director Krzystof Kieslowski. Blue is the first of three films of The Three Colours Trilogy, based on revolutionary ideas of liberty, equality and fraternity. Blue is followed by the films White and Red and according to Kieslowski, the subject of the films are liberty, in particular emotional liberty rather than political meaning. The film is set in Paris, and is about a woman whose husband and child are killed in a car accidently. Without family bonds, she cuts herself off from the world and lives in isolation, away from her former ties but finds that she cannot escape human connections.

ART: Kevin Francis Gray: Mid-Career Retrospective

Kevin Francis Gray, born in Armagh in 1972, returns to his hometown for this unique exhibition in The Market Place Gallery. The show will focus on Gray’s career until late 2015, showcasing his early investigations into material, from resin to porcelain from bronze to marble. This varied selection of work gives a glimpse into the range of personal inspirations from which he draws. Kevin exhibits regularly in New York, South America and throughout Europe.

BLUES: ONE HORSE PONY

Original Blues Roots music from Ireland’s deep south. ‘One Horse Pony’ combine superb musicianship, vocal harmonies and an uncompromising drive to deliver their stomping live shows. After a successful outing in the Market Place Theatre in Armagh as part of The 7 Hills Blues Festival in 2016, One Horse Pony are looking forward to returning to the city.

Voice of the Irish Festival closing concert

The voice of the Irish concert takes its inspiration from St Patrick writing in his Confessio that it was literally ‘the voice of the Irish’ calling him to return and introduce Christianity to Ireland. This inaugural concert will be given by the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland, with over 100 young musicians from across Ireland performing a light and highly tuneful programme of popular songs, movie themes and classic interspersed with readings and performances from some of Ireland’s top actors and musicians. Narrated through walks, talks, bells, drums, processions and much more celebrating the life of Ireland’s patron saint set in his adopted homeland.
