A Hamiltonsbawn man who overtook two unmarked police cars while travelling above the speed limit has been handed three penalty points.
Court heard that the 21-year-old is an HGV driver and already had three prior points which had also been for speeding.
Sam McElveen, of Johnstown Mews, pleaded guilty to excess speed at Armagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
Court heard that on February 14, at around 1.45am, two unmarked police vehicles on Dobbin Road, in the city, were overtaken by the defendant.
Officers observed that McElveen was travelling at in excess of 60mph in what was a 50mph zone.
They spoke to the defendant who made no reply when cautioned.
Court heard that McElveen was an HGV driver and that he had three live penalty points on his licence which had also been for speeding.
Defence barrister Scott McWhinney stated: “On the night in question Mr McElveen had been travelling home. He had not been driving in a professional fashion.”
He added: “My client has been told by his employers that six penalty points really is the most they could stomach.”
McElveen was handed three penalty points and ordered to pay a fine of £100, along with the offender’s levy of £15.
