A Middletown-based business is offering a substantial reward for information relating to an armed robbery at their premises on Saturday (August 22).
The bureau de change within Hughes’ shop on the Monaghan Road was robbed by an individual who produced what police believe to be a small handgun shortly before 1pm.
A police spokesperson explained: “It was reported that a man with a hood up and his face covered had entered the premises shortly beforehand, armed with what we believe to have been a small handgun. He demanded money from the employee and subsequently took a quantity of cash before making off in a blue Volkswagen Passat.”
It is understood that the staff member was unharmed but “obviously shaken” by the ordeal.
Reports subsequently reveal the Volkswagen Passat came out of a small road just before Hughes’ shop and left across the bridge heading for Monaghan and that it displayed no number plates on the front or back.
The bureau de change is now offering a reward of €5,000 for any information about this vehicle, or about who was driving it.
They say all information will be treated in strict confidence and can be given by contacting the owner of the bureau de change.
