A complete resurfacing scheme of the Newry Road into Armagh – described as being in a “terrible condition” – will take place.
Plans for the work – stretching from the junction of Barrack Street as far out as Cavanacaw – are said to be at an advanced stage.
Works over the course of recent years have left the surface uneven and patchy and potholes are a major concern on a main route into the city.
SDLP Councillor Mealla Campbell said she had received confirmation this week from Transport NI that the scheme would take place.
She welcomed the move and expressed the hope that disruption be kept to a minimum.
“Many of our roads are in a terrible state and I am constantly passing through complaints and queries on behalf of local residents,” said councillor Campbell.
“Some roads are beginning to be repaired and others are being patched and this work has to be welcomed.
“One of the roads I am frequently contacted about is the main Newry Road out of Armagh city.
“The road has been dug up so many times with different utility companies over recent years it’s in a terrible mess.
“The surface is very uneven and motorists are constantly complaining about the condition of the road and the damage being caused to vehicles.
“I have been constantly lobbying for improvements and I am delighted to have received confirmation this week that the Newry Road – from the junction at Barrack Street to the junction with the Cavanacaw Road at Woodford – is to be completely resurfaced.”
Whilst no starting date has been given as yet, she said she had been informed that all of the necessary preparatory works are being carried out and the planning works are “at an advanced stage”.
Added councillor Campbell: “This is great news and will be welcomed by all who use the Newry Road.
“Obviously there will be disruption whilst the works take place, however I will continue to work with officials to minimise the disruption caused to motorists and residents alike. Let’s hope the disruption is worth it when the road is resurfaced.”
