Tributes have been paid to Gertrude Mallon – wife of former MP and Deputy First Minister Seamus Mallon – who has passed away.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mrs Gertrude Mallon, wife of my friend and colleague, Seamus Mallon,” said SDLP MLA Justin McNulty.
“I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Seamus, Orla, and the wider family circle on what is the saddest of occasions for them.
“Gertrude made an outstanding contribution in her chosen profession of nursing and was a rock to her husband, Seamus, through the most difficult days of the Troubles here.
“She was a woman of courage who did not flinch even in the face of bomb and bullet. She will be sorely missed by Seamus and Orla and by all who loved and knew her.
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam Uasal.”
SDLP Councillor Sharon Haughey-Grimley has also expressed her deepest sympathy.
Cllr Haughey said: “Our hearts are broken for Seamus, his daughter Orla and granddaughter Lára at this terribly sad time.
“Although Gertrude had suffered illness for some time, her parting will be very sorely felt by those who loved and cared for her.
“I have no doubt the entire Markethill community and indeed people right across this island will rally around Seamus and Orla at this sad time. May she rest in peace.”
