Tributes paid to extraordinary Armagh ‘ambassador’ for road bowls

Tributes have been paid to the life of an extraordinary Armagh sportsman who was known throughout Road Bowls and GAA circles for his unwavering commitment and love of the game.

Patrick – better known as ‘Pa’ – McClatchey hailed from both Tynan and Middletown. He passed away peacefully in hospital on May 4.

Since then, those who had the privilege of knowing his prowess on both the field and road have recalled their fond memories.

Regarded by Middletown GAA as a “stalwart” of their Championship winning teams in the 1970’s, the club penned a tribute to his invaluable contribution upon learning of his death.

Said the club: “Middletown GAA are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Patrick “Pa” McClatchey (Balteagh). We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his wife Kate, his sons Martin, Kevin, Paul and Declan, and his brother Sean.

“Pa was a stalwart of our championship winning teams of the 1970’s playing at midfield and providing the bedrock for our Junior and Intermediate successes.

“Pa was a great fielder of the ball and could notch a score or two as well as looking after his teammates when the going got tough. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

The former Gaelic player was also heavily involved with Road Bowls across Ireland.

In a heartfelt tribute, Road Bowls Ireland said of their dear friend: “Road bowls in Ireland would like to express our deepest condolences to Kate, Declan, Martin, Paul and Kevin on the passing of Pa.

“Pa was a great friend to many road bowlers and a huge ambassador for the unlimited Road bowling scores, often travelling to Bantry for competitions and to Mayo with the boys with Kate always by his side.

“He would always be seen travelling to the king and queen of the roads in Cork along with all Irelands. The commitment to his love of the game has been passed onto his sons and they all bring such joy to us all.

“He will be so dearly missed by us all and may his kind gentle soul rest in peace.”

As a mark of respect, there will be no road bowling at Madden this evening (May 5).

Updated fixtures with be posted later in the week.

A death notice described Pa as the beloved husband of Kate (née Greene) and devoted father of Martin, Paul, Kevin and Declan and dear brother of Sean (Sam).

His funeral arrangements will be announced later with all enquiries to Damian Smith Undertaker.
