Volunteers’ Week 1 – 7 June is an annual UK wide campaign which recognises the contribution volunteers make to our communities every day.
The theme for this year is ‘Time to Celebrate’ and local volunteer involving organisations will be recognising and thanking their many volunteers for all the hard work and commitment they offer.
One local volunteer, Dermot Mooney explains what his volunteering means to him: “I volunteer with Armagh Rural Transport.
“I decided to get involved because I saw a need for this service in a rural area and I’m involved as both a Board Member and as a volunteer driver.
“I enjoy the social aspect, the satisfaction of providing a much-needed service to the community and I believe volunteering is good for a person’s mental and physical health.”
Denise Hayward, CEO, Volunteer Now explains: “There are currently over a quarter of a million volunteers in Northern Ireland who all play a vital role; from volunteer drivers to sports coaches, hospital volunteers to those working in charity shops.
“Within the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council area we have almost 3,500 volunteers and Volunteers’ Week offers the opportunity to shine the spotlight on these local people and give them the recognition and thanks they deserve.”
