A former saddler’s store which has laid empty on Armagh’s highstreet since its closure more than 20 years ago is now set to hand the reins over to a new business!
The premises at 20 Thomas Street was for many decades full to bursting with saddles lovingly made by the hands of renowned former jockey, John ‘Jackie’ Stinson.
Known as ‘Stinson the Saddler’s’, Jackie built a reputation for outstanding craftmanship and leatherwork, a skill he passed onto his beloved granddaughter, Emma Stinson of ‘Simply E Designs’.
As a jockey who backed 67 winners in his hunt racing career and an experienced horse breeder, Jackie was a treasure trove of equestrian knowledge.
His shop – where his expertise drew people in from far and wide – sadly closed its doors when Jackie retired and never reopened.
Tragically, the equine enthusiast was killed in 2009 following an accident involving a lorry in Armagh city centre – aged 76.
In the years that followed the closure of Jackie’s store, the windows lay boarded up and the cracks began to show.
The building itself fell into a sorry state of repair. It became Thomas Street’s greatest eyesore, weeds sprouting from every nook and cranny.
It was then bought over by a property developer who held onto it for a number of years before it was eventually sold on to Drumarg Properties, three years ago.
Drumarg Properties then lodged plans for the full redevelopment of the premises to bring it back into productive use – and freshen up the highstreet!
Passers by will no doubt have clocked the work! The new shop front was recently unveiled with the removal of boards and cladding in the last number of weeks.
Speaking to Armagh I, Tommy McCague of Drumarg Properties said they are delighted with the results of their labours… albeit, it’s been a costly exercise!
He says the property has been full refurbed top to bottom with all the latest modcons, fittings and features.
It now boasts a ground floor commercial unit with a kitchenette and two upper floor apartments.
Drumarg Properties are also delighted to soon be starting work on yet another long-vacant premises, bringing Sheelagh McBride’s hair salon back to its former glory… with a complete refurbishment throughout.
